The German–Bulgarian partnership, he noted, had played a decisive role in supporting the country’s reform process after the political transition and had helped make possible its full integration into the European Union. With full membership of the Schengen Area since 2025 and accession to the eurozone as of 1 January, Bulgaria had taken its place at the heart of the EU. The country, he added, makes a substantial contribution to the protection of the EU’s external borders.

European Sky Shield
In terms of security policy, Bulgaria continues to support Ukraine, advocates diplomatic solutions in the Middle East, and works to promote stability in the Black Sea region, including through the planned establishment of a centre for maritime security. At the same time, Bulgaria is modernising its armed forces, for example through new patrol vessels, air defence within the framework of the European Sky Shield initiative, and a German–Bulgarian joint venture in the field of ammunition production.

The Ambassador also highlighted the close societal and cultural ties between the two countries: the large Bulgarian diaspora in Germany, youth programmes, parliamentary exchanges, tourism and a strong cultural presence – including the film Nina Roza, which is largely set in Bulgaria and won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale in February 2026.

In conclusion, the Ambassador expressed his gratitude to all institutions and organisations that support the bilateral relationship and invited guests to enjoy a Bulgarian buffet.
