On October 21st, the Ambassador of Mexico, H.E. Francisco José Quiroga Fernández, invited guests to his embassy on the occasion of Día de Muertos and for the opening of the Altar de Muertos.
The day began early in the morning for "Willkommen in Berlin" with a fashion show at the embassy. Magnificent costumes were presented in quick succession and delighted the guests. What later started as a reception quickly turned into a warm celebration of remembrance. The centrepiece was a monumental, colourful altar from Huejutla de Reyes, decorated with vibrant paper banners, candles, fruits, and an arch made of orange cempasúchil (marigold) blossoms. Following a welcome address by the Ambassador of Mexico, H.E. Francisco José Quiroga Fernández, Neyda Naranjo Baltazar, Minister of Culture for the State of Hidalgo, emphasised that traditions only remain alive if communities pass them on. The speakers described the altar as a "window to our homeland, our history, and the warmth of our people." As every year, it required many helping hands to decorate this altar so magnificently once again and to keep the memory of the deceased alive and honoured. Staff from across the entire embassy and dedicated volunteers had prepared a homemade buffet with enchiladas and fruit. Dressed in traditional attire and with elaborate Catrina makeup, they contributed to the special atmosphere.
